Number 1: Diadumenian I have chosen this coin because the reverse is unusual. details are sharp and the patina is green green Won it at an auction on ebay, not very cheap but I couldnt let this coin go. Diadumenian ruled for a very short time, I like the large coins minted under his rule. Region : MOESIA INFERIOR City : Marcianopolis Issuer : Macrinus and Diadumenian Denomination : Pentassarion Diameter : 26.5 mm Obverse Description : Laureate head of Macrinus right facing bare-head of Diadumenian left Reverse Description : Snake in four coils with head erect, E left

Number 2: Olbia Dolphin Money +/- 500-400 b.c. I know very little about this money, denomination is almost impossible. The reason why I like it? Its so old and unusual, The coin IS animal I bought a lot of 3 Olbia coins minted in Sarmatia. The price was right and my goal is to create a wide collection of special, unusual and beautiful ancient coins. So there was space for 2 of such dolphin coins.

Darn... I also planned to post an Olbia dolphin coin, which I guess would be redundant now. That said, Dutchgulden, your Olbia dolphin is by far the best example I've ever seen yet (including on auction photos). As far as I know/remember (I hadn't fully identified some of my ancients, and on one or two there might be animal-related details off-flan or worn away), if humans and satyrs don't count as animals, my only other ancient with an animal on it is a Fallen Horseman coin - one of the cruder officials... I can barely see the figure that is supposed to be the horse, and would never have identified it as a horse if I didn't know already. (Oh, and I also got it pretty randomly in one of the earlier smackdowns - heck, I didn't even know it was a Fallen Horseman until I received it - so there's no cool acquisition story either.) So I suspect I'll be staying off at this particular smackdown

Ostrogothic KingdomAE Follis Obv: IMVICT-A ROMA, Roma helmeted, facing right Rev: Eagle standing left, facing right, XL to left, [dot II dot] in ex Rome mint, struck 494-534 AD Ref: BMC 11, Notes: Municipal coinage of Rome 1. I sought this type out because I am a passionate collector of Ostrogothic and other Dark Ages coinage. More specifically, its one of my favorite types from the Ostrogothic series, so I just had to have it Plus it having an eagle touches the bird lover in me (I have a parrot). 2. As mentioned before, I really enjoy collecting from this culture so I am always on the look out for any Ostrogothic coin that I have a chance of getting. For this one though I had put in some extra effort when I was searching for any Ostrogoth coins and found it being offered on a lightly traveled part of the internet. I snatched it up immediately. This was the first one I found (out of like three I've seen in total for sale) that wasn't hundreds and hundreds of dollars. 3. I searched to no avail for the reason for the eagle depicted on the Ostrogoths' coinage. I'm guessing it had to do with the eagle's old symbolic role as the protector of the Roman legions of centuries past (and by extension, of the Roman people and state). This fits in with King Theodoric's desire to respect and protect classical Roman culture. I'm probably wrong, and Theodoric just simply liked birds

VK spectacular patina. Same for Dutch on the Diadumenian, and that is the prettiest dolphin.

Ostrogothic KingdomAE Half-Follis Obv: IMVICT-A ROMA, Roma helmeted, facing right Rev: She-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, two stars above, XX (for "20 [nummi]") below Rome mint, struck 494-534 AD Ref: BMC 30, Notes: Municipal coinage of Rome 1. Same as the first part of my other answer for this question. I just love me mah Ostros 2. Was browsing for Ostrogothic coins like I normally do and I found it up on auction. I thought it was going to be a bidding battle for it so I figured there was going to be only a slight chance of me winning it at a price I was comfortable with. To my surprise I ended up being the only bidder . Before that I only had a worn down full 40 follis version of this type. 3. This type I'm very certain was an attempt by the Ostrogoths to celebrate ancient Roman culture, by depicting Romulus and Remus being suckled by a she-wolf (central to the legend of the founding of Rome).

A bit hard to vote really...
Gold: ValiantKnight's IMVICTA ROMA Silver: Ancientnoob's Zebu bulls Bronze: Dutchgulden's dolphin just barely missed: augustus1's Cretan goat
It's a bit funny (and unfortunate): Dutchgulden had got a coin recently (a few hours before the smackdown ended) that, had it been his[1] entry (together with the dolphin), would've propelled him into the clear gold position. Alas, he decided to enter early.
[1] if I'm incorrect, sorry

Quote: Im sorry about the dolphin, like you said, you had the same idea to post. I have no problem about the dolphin (I certainly wouldn't have wanted you to ignore yours because I posted mine!) I said that I didn't "get" the other coin (and suggested a certain coin you recently acquired as a theoretical replacement entry; you could probably guess which one). IIRC Diadumenian is your speciality, though, so it's somewhat understandable that you chose a coin of him
