Gold - Maridvnvm Thessaly, Larissa, Silver Drachm Silver - Pishpash Athens owl Bronze - Murtivlatoris Zuegitania
What a great smackdown, I especially love archaic Greek coins so this one had many entries which were particularly to my taste.

ok, again I'm trying to spread my votes around a bit.
gold: pish's new owl! silver: DG's snake and dolphin coiny thing combo bronze: MV's tripod, dolphin, raven coin...man that thing is awesome.
everyone had great coins, ski's triga denarius, duk's stater, martin's Thessaly, warren crazy horn goat denarius, and I always like to see coins from VK's niche.

Ancientnoob and january1may: I can't tally the votes until you clarify which of ValiantKnight's entries you are voting for. He posted two "IMVICT-A ROMA" coins, a follis and a half follis. Once you provide this info I'll wrap this up. While we're waiting, if you haven't voted go ahead and do so. Quick stats:
- 10 individuals submitted coins
- total of 18 coins entered
- to my chagrin, only 6 of the entries met the qualifications for bonus
- 11 people have voted

Nevermind, Noob and January... it doesn't make a difference to the top 3. There were bunches of interesting entries so thanks for the entertainment and education I particularly enjoy stories about why you liked a certain coin and how you went about getting it. I took a hardnose line about the bonus because I asked that you address all 3 questions to qualify... many of you answered 1 or 2 but not all three. The questions were: 1) Why you sought out this coin or this type of coin. 2) How you found this particular coin, the lengths you went through to get it, how you won or bought it, prior attempts and failures, etc. 3) Why did the issuer use that animal? If scholarly literature doesn't answer the question, provide your best guess. Here's the checklist of the entries and whether or not the questions were addressed (***means that bonus criteria were met): chrsmat71, Sept. Sev. 1 yes 2 yes 3 no
***chrsmat71, Julian II 1 yes 2 yes 3 yes
***pishpash, owl tet 1 yes 2 yes 3 yes
pishpash, Carthage AE shekel 1 yes 2 yes 3 no
echizento, Lydia AR stater 1 no 2 no 3 no

"Owls have long been considered "wise" and presumably this connects with Athena Goddess of Wisdom." Not good enough hey?
Congrats to everyone. It was really, really hard to pick favourite coins, I think everyone deserved at least a bronze.

Oh, whoops, I missed that. I will correct the standings :)
Hope I didn't miss others as well.
Suggestion to voters in subsequent Smackdowns-- please use the screen name, not the IRL name which the host may not know. Maybe in the future entries should have names and numbers for ease of voting, such as "pishpash #1".

I kinda answered 3. with regards to my turtle (that I presume the turtle is the symbol of the islands) but didn't address it specifically with regards to the Corinth Stater (They had to put something on the reverse though :P) Bonus points are fun but if your hosting they can be a bit of a nightmare to keep track of and sometimes it leaves you difficult decisions or there are grey area's. Great job hosting though.
Anyway I think a worthy victor for this excellent smack down.
