That is just plain ridiculous people never fail to amaze and bewilder me with acts like this Maybe use warm distilled water and hope the glue on the tape does not put up much of a fight, then again, maybe cold could be better or the glue could spread Good luck. I hope the Carausius is OK, it looks like it could be a decent one.

Very lazy packing, obviously couldn't be a****d to buy a Jiffy Bag and get a sheet of Bubble-Wrap. That alone would have done the job of giving basic protection. Maybe this was done out of bitterness, maybe the seller did not think they got a "good price" for the coins?

Chemical means will be your best bet. Glue is a polar molecule, thats why its so darn sticky. To dissolve it oyu need a polar solvent - Acetone would be best suited here. I usually use white spirit for such applications as its easier to get a hold of but its a weaker solvent. Using those solvents may have adverse effects to weak patinas, but you should be alright with them and they wont react with anything a coin usually has on it. Leave them soaking for a while, then change the solvent occasionally. Dont try to remove the tape - you need it to fall off, which it will eventually. Tape breaks even really tough patinas - one of my first coins fell foul to it.
Any idea how good the Carausius is? Thats one you need to be really careful with. As I say, dont apply force at any point, just let the acetone do its thing until the tape just falls off.

I soaked the Carausius so long in distilled water that the tape just fell off however it still caused a little bit of damage.(light pitting to both sides.) Personally the Carausius is a little bit of a disappointment, The reverse is weak and even after the seller saying it was a Providentia reverse IMO it looks more like Pax? The detail on the reverse was very difficult to capture, angling the light brought it out a bit. Whats everyones opinions on it? This nice campgate was in the mix too...

GEt him to refund you a bit. That damage is just shoddy. Nice campgate.
And I think the carausius is PROVID AVG. The legend is not proportioned to be PAX AVG.

I have enquired about a partial refund so I will see how it goes. I get what you mean about it being PROVID AVG but don't you thing that the figure looks a bit too manly to be Providentia? Is it on Wildwinds?

I've had a good look at Wildwinds at both Providentia and Pax however I can't find a match still. I've taken a few pictures in better lighting and also highlighted the reverse in red. it looks like someone advancing left ? Any ideas?

It looks like Victory. Its a female advancing left with a skirt. Perhaps describable as walking left or standing left. The reverse legend matches PROVID AVG. But I can find no record of anything matching it - and Helvetica's spread sheets are likely the most comprehensive about. I recommend you send it to the BM - they'll ID it and record it and return it for free - you just need to pay postage (and a donation would be suggested).

Thanks Ben for all your help. Just sent an email to the coin department of the BM; it will be interesting to see what they say.

Second lot arrived today! For how much I payed they were worth every penny. Here are the highlights of the lot: (Looks like quite a nice barbarous Magnentius in the mix?)

Heres the email that I received back from Sam Moorhead at the BM: Quote: Dear Will,
Thank you so much for sending the image. I am writing the new edition of RIC for Carausius.
This is:
IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG; Radiate, draped [and cuirassed?] right
PAX AVG; Pax advancing left, holding (branch) and transverse sceptre
Mintmark: -//MCXXI
Cf. RIC 326
This is not a common coin. I have four with this reverse type in my corpus, one which probably shares the same obverse. It now has its own entry in my corpus and I have saved the images.
I am assuming that none of the detector coins you have are on the PAS database. I would be really interested to see your collection so I could include your pieces in my corpus prior to creating the new catalogue. At present it runs to about 700 pages! If you are happy for me to use your coins, a disc of images would be wonderful.
Please do stay in touch.
With best wishes,
Sam

Interesting. He's got a picture of my Carausius/Capricorn, I believe. Might be worth us all pooling our Carausian collections - I recently sold my rarest, a VIRTVS AVG, but I've come into contact with more than 10 of him and a few werent PAX.
That PAX AVGGG is nice. I assume you're keeping it? and the magnentius is also pretty nice. You did well with that lot.
