Just got this pretty cool looking medal. I have not been able to find any background info using the writing 1863 - 1903 February 11. I know Anton Scarff is Austrian but he was commissioned by other countries pretty often it seems so I am not even sure this medal is Austrian. My world history is pretty bad, anyone have any ideas on at least who those people are?

The dimensions are approx 2.5 x 2 inches and weighs 4 ounces

Thanks

I wonder if it could be a privately-commissioned medal for a 40th wedding anniversary?

That seems pretty reasonable. Not that it made them historically relevant but you probably had to be pretty well-off to have a medal(s) as nice as this made for an anniversary.

Not as exciting as I was hoping, but I still like it.

Prince Wilhelm of Baden (b.1829) married Princess Maria Maximilianovna von Leuchtenburg, Princess Romanovskaja, on February 11, 1863 in St. Petersburg. Such a power couple of the German nobility would warrant a plaquette such as this, but if these are the two pictured, it would give the plaquette a whole other, creepy meaning. Prince Wilhelm died in 1897.

Princess Maria in earlier, happier times. A good likeness?

There is quite a resemblance I'd say. The strong chin and great hair are shared between the two.
