I was wondering if anyone could tell me if my 2001 Panda coin is fake or real. I picked up a box at a auction and got two panda coins in the bottom. I collect coins and never came across one of these before so I would love for it to be real but I have my doubts. The coin looks exactly like the real thing but this coin is all silver except for the panda being gold. That's what has me suspicious as after researching these I have yet to come across another one that looks like this. Someone Please HELP

Hard to tell , need sharper pictures. And the gold gilting covers defects in the fur which is a sign of a fake. But none of the other obvious counterfeit indicators are there. All things usually indicating counterfeits, are correct on this coin.
Without better pictures to pick up something I am not seeing , I would venture to say it looks real to me

Third party " mints " gilt these. But they are still real and worth a premium over spot silver price.

I just picked up a 2001 I happened to have handy and they seem to match up pretty perfectly on the eyeball test, except for the gilt, which I've seen on occasion. The best way to tell w/out using chemicals or expensive metal composition scanners (which I'd love to have) is to get a very precise scale. In my experience, the fakes are usually quite a bit lighter than the authentic ones. I also keep a handy neodymium magnet, next to my magnifying glass, which works well on 14K marked gold and sterling silver chains (you'd be surprised how many of those I've discovered to be fakes). In my admittedly amateurish experience, between those three tools, one can suss out probably 90% of all silver forgeries.

As way to find out if fake or not is the comparative ring tone test against a known genuine coin.
If you don't have a known genuine to test it against, then
XRF is the easiest non destructive way to conclusively prove fake or no.

I am not familiar with this series. However, many mints around the World have selectively gold plated NCLT silver collector coins for a number of years.

It has the brightness of the panda which is easily lost on silver plated counterfeit, fur detail, although covered is still prevalent. I think this is a hard year to counterfeit. A fine Panda specimen.
