Just a thought. The last 50c circulating commemorative we had was back in 2010. Has the RAM decided to restrict 50c commemoratives to be solely NCLT "Granny Bait"?

Fair question. I'll betcha the RAM is both unable and unwilling to answer that. It will depend mainly on what advice they get from their marketing department.

I think we will see more of them. If anything they are doing more rather than less 'non standard' coins. Eg $2 coins recently.

The RAM does not issue commemorative coin every year, as history tells us. I doubt they will stop issuing them in the future.

Quote: The RAM does not issue commemorative coin every year, as history tells us. I doubt they will stop issuing them in the future. I think you will find that pretty much every year they issue at least one circulating commemorative of one type or another. In the 80s and 90s it was almost exclusively 50c and $1. Then they started on the 20c and more recently the $2. But nothing for the 50c since the Australia Day 2010 coin. Thats almost 4 years ago.

And no 50 cent commemorative issue circulation for 1971-76, 1978-81, 1983-88, 1989-1993, 1996-1997, 2006-2009. So 4 years sounds right. The RAM produces too much junk anyway.

I see your point, but they are commemorative crazy, so I will think more are coming.

Hi, there is this info for proposed 2013 RAM issues on the Comlaw website I recently posted about. But it doesn't say if it is planned to be circulating or NCLT. I can't say I have seen anything else about this coin anywhere and 2013 is fast running out ... http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2...atement/TextItem 11 - 50c Copper and Nickel Coin - Boer War Reverse A representation of a statue of a soldier riding a horse. The design includes a representation of a pedestal containing the a coloured representation of the King's South Africa medal ribbon and a coloured representation of the Queen's South Africa medal ribbon. In the background, and partially obscured by the pedestal there is a stylised representation of a semi-circular wreath. The inscriptions ‘BOER WAR', ‘1899', ‘1902' and ‘50' are also included in the design together with a stylised representation of the designer's initials ‘AB'. Obverse Consistent with all Australian legal tender coinage, an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the obverse side of the coin together with the inscriptions ‘ELIZABETH II', ‘AUSTRALIA' and the inscription, in numerals, of a year. The obverse design includes the initials of the designer Ian Rank-Broadley ‘IRB'.

Making commemorative coins for circulation doesn't stop those same coins from being packaged and sold as well. Having interesting circulating coins would also create interest in coin collecting I general which also leads to interest in the RAMs other products.

regarding the proposed Boer War coin - "containing the a coloured representation of the King's South Africa medal ribbon and a coloured representation of the Queen's South Africa medal ribbon."
- the two coloured areas suggest to me that this was never going to be a circulation issue.
Also, the dates to be commemorated - 1899 or 1902 - don't align with any anniversary coming up soon.
Strange, because the Boer war is being commemorated in other ways.
