I recently bought a 40% silver 1976-S proof half dollar for $4.29. Does that sound like a good deal? I checked ebay and most of them are $10 or more.

Yes a very good deal. Is it an impaired proof?

It's not an MS-70 or anything, but I don't see any major imperfections. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance.

I'm happy with my purchase. I like the bicentennial coins, and the fact that it's a silver proof is the cherry on top. The half was originally marked $10 so I think I got a good deal. Like you said, if I'm happy with it then it is a good deal.

You made an excellent purchase for your 1976 Kennedy.

There is another forum I visit (I'm not going to mention it by name but the initials are "CT") which is a bastion of negativity. Had I posted this there, somebody would have said something rude about my half. I've posted pictures of my coins there and somebody said "it's worth melt value" or something similar. Had I asked what the coin was worth then it would have been appropriate but I didn't. Thank you for being positive and saying kind things about my half dollar.

My only concern is are you sure it is silver? If it is then you got a good deal, if it it isn't then not so good. Well you have to admit, if you ask if you got a good deal, you are in effect asking "What is it worth?".

Conder101: Yes, it's silver. Also, in the posts I'm referring to, I didn't ask the value, I just posted pictures of my coins to share with other forum members because I thought they might enjoy seeing the pictures. I also got flamed up one side and down the other for cleaning some Washington quarters that were in HORRIBLE shape. You could barely tell some of them were quarters they were so rusted. "Never clean a coin" is not a hardcore rule in my playbook. I said something to the effect of "they are now nice coins" and somebody said, verbatim, "no they are not nice coins". Not a nice thing to say about somebody who was rather proud of turning garbage into gold (or silver in this case).

I'm not going to express a values judgement here, but you should know that Coin Community was originally founded by two members of that forum who grew weary of their poor treatment there. So, they founded a competing forum by way of protest and part of our strict enforcement of the rules of conduct is due to that experience.

I don't blame the founders from splitting away from that forum. They take themselves WAY too seriously and get livid if you do something like clean a coin. I posted that I had cleaned a beat up 1953 nickel and some of the guys came unglued. One of them said something like "no serious coin collector would buy your nickel." I asked why a serious coin collector would even be interested in a well-circulated 1953 nickel that might be worth six cents tops. Anyway, thanks for starting this forum. Hopefully I'll have a better experience here.

I remember those threads and you are right they did get rather silly about their comments. The quarters were just worth melt before you cleaned them so you couldn't really hurt them. Sure afterwards they were still basically worth melt, but they did look a lot better than before you started. You will find that most forums tend to get too hung up on value and what you can sell the coins for. More like coin selling forums than coin collecting. Also many posters seem to be more advanced collectors who have more money than average and they seem to slight coins that are lower grade or with any type of problem as being "worthless". Something of an "elitist" attitude. You will see this to some extent in all forumsd.

Thanks for the kind words. I don't understand why they got so mad about those quarters. They looked terrible and like you said, were worth melt. Now they look presentable and they're worth the same, possibly a bit more to the right person. I'm happy with them, why can't they be happy for me?

Quote: I'm happy with them, why can't they be happy for me? Because they're elitist *******s who can't understand how one can enjoy numismatics without spending a minimum of $500 per coin. They fail to see that it's just as important to posterity to preserve an AG Flying Eagle cent as it is an MS64 one. If we ever get like that around here, call us out. Cleaning coins is bad, and the next person I flame for doing it won't be the first. Except, sometimes cleaning isn't bad.
