Hi awildeheart, There are a few method's to taking your Photo's. Try to keep basic, Start by using a camera it does not matter which brand. Next choose super macro if the camera has this, this setting is for very close up pic's.
You can use "Auto" function, but you can also select "Program".
Using Program let's you have more control over your setting's.
Select Program mode, then select S/Macro. In setting's go to Photometry & select Spot Focus. While your in setting's White Balance is next, choose Custom W/B & take a photo of a White piece of copy paper in the light that you will be using.
That is the camera set up. Select Program, Macro mode, Spot Focus & White Balance that's 4 thing's.
I take most of mine next to the Window, Defused with the curtain but not face to face with the sunlight. A soft overcast look of the Day.
I am used to this method, But you might to learn under light's. ( Both is good ) & all has it's merits.
Really the most & last action is Taking the Picture.
Hold the camera above the coin ( TriPod) or by hand.
Not to close or the Image will be dark (under exposed) & out of Focus. You have to leave enough space for the light to get through but not to Bright. This is were Lamp's come into play as you can get the light source in very close Depending on you Len's.
Secondly you can hold the camera higher and Zoom in on the coin. This is were the tripod is needed for Shaking (Blur). And will give you more space for the light, but to much Zoom in will increase your Pixel Blur (pro's & con's).
So really out of these Chinese instruction's,
1. Program mode, Macro, Spot Focus & White Balance.
2. Type and location of different Light Sources.
3. Camera position & Action.
Hope this little Beer Talk

can help you with your practice into Photography!
