NGC world coin guide lists this 1815 Austrian 1/2 thaler at $70. I think its too low for a coin with just 7,849 mintage. I got this for a $50 and was sold as a full thaler as the seller was mistaken and I didn't notice until I received the coin. I dont see many austrian 1/2 thaler on eBay/mashops, maybe there is not much demand for 1/2 thalers ?

To be of value, there has to be a market for the coin. A coin can actually be too rare. If you have a group coins that no one cares to collect you have rarity with little value. That was discovered by the incredible number of limited issue collectable coins made in groups of 100 or less by the Franklin mint or by pseudo-countries like the Marshall Islands. As soon as the coins were sold and the hype died down there was no market and no value. I fear the 1/2 Thalers may be in a similar state.

But at least they are historic and not some cheesy modern play money.

Relying on NGC to give a value on a European coin is a bit like asking an oil trader to estimate the value of a rare earth metal. The oil trader will have a better feel than the average joe...but still won't know that market particularly well. I would trust NGC and PCGS only on US coins.

I often get significant discount in the US on European coins compared to their European market value. Here is a low grade example that sold at US$136.00

Note with 1/2 and full thalers price climbs significantly with grade.

In this case I believe it is due to the fact that this is actually one of the highest mintage dates in the series. If it were a 1-year type with that mintage, I am willing to bet the prices would be significantly higher. If you're going to spend big bucks for an example of that series, do you spend it on the one with 7k mintage, or the one with only 1k or 2k?
