I just came from looking up the 1953 Canadoian 25 cent coin at coinsandcanada. There are supposed to be differences between the small date and the large date however, when I clicked on either they are both the same. I looked to see if the antlers were a bit further away or the ear isn't pointing in the exact direction and they are both the same! What's the point of posting two pctures that are the same? I looked at my coin and can plainly see that the 9 is almost touching the alnter. Not so in either of the coins shown by the coinsandcanada site. Where else can I go to get an accurate picture of whatever it might be I'm loking for. And I'm going to guess that my coin must be the large date since the 9 is closer to the antler than the pictures in the coinsandcanada site. I really do hate guessing!

The small date has the 9 closer to the antler.

Try a Charlton, Canadian coins-Numismatic issue. New $25+tax used $10 and free from local library. You should be checking for Shoulder fold and No shoulder fold. The No shoulder fold comes with the large date and the Shoulder fold comes with the small date.

Thanks for all the replies. I was just miffed that the pictures were the same. I'll change mine to small nine if the antlers are closer as DBM said. Pennyman - my son bought me the Charlton Coin guide but apparently it is the wrong one. Why would they put out a right one and a wrong one? How about just one ACCURATE book? Anyway, not your problem, (unles your compiled and published it!)

bobberbear,
go to the coinsandcanada site to the page for 1953 25cents,
scroll down a bit,to where it says "Small Date N/A",the picture of the small date coin is not available there.
I don't see how you could say the pictures of both are the same, as there is only one coin pictured
scroll a bit further down the page 'til you get to "25 cents 1953-Rotated 15%",click on that, the rotated die coin is a "small date".
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I dont know what your talking about, a right one and a wrong one. There are different kinds, collector issue, numismatic issue how could any of them be the wrong one? Besides the information your looking for is listed in the 2012 issue I have. Coins and Canada is a great site still in the making but its certainly not the first time I've seen conflicting information or missing pictures there. I just checked and have found the info your looking for listed in several different books, Coins of Canada 1990 I bought for .50 cents has your info listed.
