I found a seller on ebay a few weeks ago who had a bunch of modern silver dollar commemoratives. Most of them sold for about $2 over melt and I picked a few up.

However this one sold for $35. Since the Ellis Island has the highest mintage and this one has horrible eye appeal and there are hundeds of nice ones listed at any given time on ebay what am I missing here?

And it's not the GSC effect as the seller had another Ellis Island listed at the same time which I picked up for a pocket piece for $17.

Bidding results on ebay can be a tough thing to explain â€" I've seen a large number of things go either way too cheap or for prices that were crazy high.

Regarding the SoL silver dollar, one thing I can offer is that maybe the top two bidders misinterpreted the shadowing on the lettering on the coin's reverse and thought they might be cherry-picking an unreported double-die coin. The lighting/scanning/imaging of the coin appears to "double" multiple letters within the Emma Lazarus quote, but this is just an imaging artifact and not real.
