Hi..Was looking at my 18 or so 1953 nickels..I came across one that had all the characteristics of a 1950 NSF/near...here is the problem..look at the first 1953 coin and see how thick the border is on this coin...NOW, look at the second picture..if the border was a normal thick border, wouldn't that make it a NSF/near coin..?..The border on the second coin for some reason is not as thick as the other 17 coins I have..hum..?

As a rule of thumb,
wide rim reverse = near leaf
wide rim obverse = SF

I believe that for all denominations except the dime, wider rims was a feature added with the '53 modifications.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

It seems like there is a lot to remember.
In "Charest book" he lists water line varieties-to the left of the beaver.
No fold- far design/ 3 water lines.=common
No fold-far design/ 1 water line.= less common
No fold-close design/ 3 water lines.= mule

With fold-close design/3,2 and 1 water line
With fold-far design/3 water lines.= mule

If we were confused before, we will be shortly.
