Is This An Authentic Ike Error? Strangeness

This is a 1977 Ike dollar that WAS sealed in its original US Mint packaging (cellophane). I had completely forgotten that I opened it this past summer. I'm not sure now if I should have done that. I guess it all depends on if this is indeed an authentic US Mint error. FTB started a thread about one of his Ike error coins, and that discussion prompted me to look at this one again. So, here it is. Thoughts? Explanations? I have no idea how something like this could have happened.

It looks like it was Struck Through Grease.
