Without being able to discern authenticity? Very risky my friend.

Authencity, colour, cleaning and hidden problems are always a risk when buying online.

I don't think I've been duped yet, buying on ebay; but (who knows?) perhaps sometime in the future, I'll be told 'it's a very good fake, but a fake, nonetheless'.

Don't you hate when people handle rare proof coins with their hands?

Don't forget the part about "Seller does not offer returns."

If it was going for, say, $0.40 I might bid just for kicks, but $20 is way too much.

yeah itd be interesting to see what exactly it is, but I wouldn't be too surprised if a bottle cap showed up in the mail versus a coin lol

At least you can see the faint outline of the design, and it looks like a 3 cent piece. Still very suspicious, though.

OK, follow up on the bogus 3cs with one that just makes me cry... Why? Because it's an incredibly rare coin that's been cleaned with sandpaper.

Fun-Thread---Worst-Coins-On-Ebay,-Etsy,-Craigslist,-And-Other-Buying-Sites!

And, yes, I know it's not really fair to call it one of the 'worst' coins on ebay. It is what it is and it's not the seller's fault what's happened to the little thing in the last 145 years. I also know the seller and he's as honest as the day is long with a good eye. I always think he's half a point high, and I'd grade it as XF Details, but he has it in hand and NGC has gone along with his grading (vs. mine) about 60% to my 40%...

What kills me is that out of a mintage of 3,000 how the heck does he get his hands on 3 of them in a three week period. In Toledo, OR of all places... population 3,466 (estimated, up one since the 2010 census).

How do I know he has three separate coins? Because I bought the certified one from him last weekend and he still has two listed on ebay!

I asked the seller of the "proof" Three Cent to send me photos that weren't taken with a potato. Still awaiting a reply.
