I've been working on my Buffalo nickel collection, and I've begun noticing, on ebay, the designation of two and a half feathers, and along with that it is designated as a variety.
Is that truly a designated variety, or is it only a ploy by the seller to lure the unknowing collector?
I've checked numerous sources on the internet, and nowhere have I seen anything about this being listed as a variety. Please satisfy my curiousity. Thanks.

I found some info for you Ralph. The 2 and 2 1/2 feather varieties are the result of excessive die polishing to remove clashes. Values and rarity depend on date/mintmark combos and vary greatly.

Okay biokemist6, that's what I was wanting to know. I thought the 2-1/2 feathers description might be a ploy to sell the coin, but I see that it is, indeed, a true variety. Thank you for the article.

I find this variety interesting and very undervalued. I think the market will climb on these as we are seeing a surge of collecting interest in the past couple years.

An interesting bit of info is that the legendary 3 legged buffalo is also often found with 2 1/2 feathers. The 2 1/2 feather variety as was stated before is indeed a result of over polishing / abraiding the dies in an effort to remove clash marks, It just so happens that this is the same cause of the 3 Legged buffalo and have you noticed the prices on them? I think its just a matter of time before more people become savy to these gems. Also if you take the time to look through dealers stock you can still cherrypick these varieties as they are often overlooked and un-attributed.

Thanks for the info. I've been aware of the 2 feather variety for some time, but have only recently begun noticing the 2-1/2 feather variety. I don't suppose there is any way of knowing how many of the Buffalo nickels have the 2 feather or the 2-1/2 feather designation - maybe just a few, or maybe a whole scad of them, but one thing's for certain - if they are scarce, they'll become collector items eventually.
