I was looking at this coin, thinking about bidding....then took a closer look at the date . Does it look off to you? Funny, this guy has a lot of nice coins and solid feedback....so this one threw me off. thoughts? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Exceptional...em1e8514769b

It does look off. Most of the "7"s of the IHC series have a pretty pronounced "double hump". Maybe it's a weird strike? Nice "double hump" 7 on an 1876 IHC to illustrate my point. But then on some, the 7 gets a little squished/flatter on top...

I am no expert on IHC and dates, but I would be leery of this coin. Not only does the 7 look "off", the 2 looks incorrect to me also. And the spacing between the numbers is bigger than it should be. I also just checked my CherryPickers Guide and I don't see any varieties based on this.

True. Also, look how wide and spread out the date is on the ebay example, compared to your authentic 1872 example.

The ebay coin is fake. No doubt about it. The entire date looks wrong. One doesn't even need to examine the rest of the coin. The seller probably doesn't realize it because from a glace (which is all I took) the rest of the coin looks fine in strike and tone.

This warrants a polite note to the seller, objectively listing the reasons for the belief, and a link to this thread. I agree, the date is very problematic.

well, all one has to do is look at the last feather on the Indian's headdress, type one would point between the I and C of AMERICA.
Clearly this coin's (1872)last feather points between the C and A, which is type2 and only seen from 1887 to 1909. the exception being the 1886 which has type1 and type 2.
the coin is not legit.
Edit, I sent a note to the seller with the info (T1 vs T2)so hopefully he saves himself a big problem.

RK55 nailed it. Appears someone has changed the date on an actual coin that was minted much later than 1872.

Why even consider spending that much money on a coin that hasn't been authenticated?

Counterfeit IHCs are very common and have been for years. It's a shame.
