I saw this on
ebay listed quite high but I lodged an offer and got it for £10 + shipping, which is a good price (it came to £13).
Why this was issued: Carausius wanted to be good pals with the emperors at Rome - he had usurped a bit of their empire, but he wanted to make amends and keep his turf, so he started issuing coins in the names of Diocletian and maximianus - note the reverse legend of AVGGG with 3 Gs - this is the 3 Augusti (the third being Carausius).
An interesting thing about these coins is that the coins bearing the name of Carausius with the AVGGG legend is actually rarer than the coins showing the other emperors, despite the fact that Carausius will have issued more in his name. Evidence suggests that Carausius' coinage was destroyed - coins like this one of Maximian turn up in later hoards, but Carausius' coins are no where to be seen (chances are, the people filtering the coins didnt know that these coins were issued by Carausius).
Unlisted, you can find an example posted on Wildwinds (same dies).
