Came across this pentanummium (5 nummi) of Justinian I while browsing ebay. One of my areas of collecting focus is early Byzantines (ca. 490s-600s AD, and preferably avoiding the eastern mints except Constantinople and Cherson). What mainly hooked me to this coin is the fact that this one is from the scarcer Carthage mint, of which I had no Byzantine coins from (until now).

During its time as the capital of the barbarian Vandal Kingdom of North Africa, Carthage struck some Vandal coins in the name of the Eastern Roman emperors, but soon struck official Byzantine coinage after the Roman reconquest of North Africa in the 530s. Carthage would remain in Byzantine hands until the Muslim conquest of the region in the late 7th century AD.

Very interesting ...... I have had a similar type listed on ebay for the past 6 months (Heraclius Carthage mint), Not even a nibble. I also thought this mint quite a 'find'.
Unfortunately once again reality set in and I realized that I could not have everything I wanted. But the fact that no one else did surprised me. I mean I was stupid enough to buy it ..... I can't be the only "big dummy" in the world !

Thats weird how even I didn't find it, I usually have a keen eye for lesser known and less popular coinage like these. I'd definitely be interested in it if you still had it but after these last two coins I'll have to go on a buying hiatus again...It's for my own good

It arrived today, and it turns out the II was actually an N, making this one from the far more common Nicomedia mint instead of Carthage A bit down but I still like the coin, plus I don't have Nico represented in my Byzantine subcollection yet.
