Poll Question
For the purposes of filling the proper slot in my 7070, does my Silly Head count as a Braided or a Matron? If it's a Matron, I have to choose between it and my 1818 N-10. If it's a Braided, I can have both. I already know what I'm going to do, but I want to see what the membership thinks.

Sure was tempted to select the last option...

Unless the RedBook is "whack", and we know it has it mistakes, I don't know why you couldn't call this a Braided hair, which is what I selected. It states that Braided hair goes from 1839-57? The mintage for 1839 Braided are included in the "all kinds" part of the 1839 Modified Matrons. So maybe yours is a Modified Silly Braided Matron Head with it being the only one reported so far!!!!

My 7070 starts the Braided Hair Coronets at 1840. Maybe they're whack.

I believe the "Braided Hair" refers to the braiding of the hair from the forehead down to the hear. In that case, this is definitely a Matron Head. This does not have braided hair anywhere on it.

Ok, so are there 1839 Braided heads? Just curious what exactly the RedBook is saying.

Yep. That design appeared on a couple varieties of 1839's, along with Silly Heads, Booby Heads...it was an interesting year.

Actually, I believe 1839 deserves its' own line of 3 or 4 holes in a 7070. After the Forum Parents' clarification, I have to wonder if this coin has a home in a 7070 at all.

It ain't Braided, it sure as heck ain't a Matron, in the pre-1836 "longshoreman" sense....maybe they should do an 1836-1839 hole instead of lumping them all together.

See, here's the problem. The 1818 definitely goes into the 7070, because otherwise I have to do a set of MS Large Cents. However, if the 1839 doesn't go in too, I have to do a set of AU Large Cents. I'm not selling either coin, and the only justification to keep them singly is for the typeset.

Help?

Not sure the small size "help" is really much of a distress call. Having said that, as my good friend Jake Blues would say, "it looks like you're up "stuff's" creek".

I understand your dilemma not to sell either coin. Selling is completely different than donating though, and I sure could find a nice place for either....

BTW, aren't there blank Dansco pages? I think you should add a page with every version of 1839's, to include the braided 1839, silly, booby. Doesn't seem you'll be able to put a very high grade 39 over 36 though....

I believe that the 1839 design reflected a modified Matron Head, though the Red Book doesn't really go into much detail on that. I agree with you, Dave, that there should be a couple extra slots for this transitional year.

There is the head of 1836 which is a Matron, the head of 1838 which is also a Matron, the Silly and Booby heads which are really their own design and can't be considered Matron or Braided. There is also the head of 1840 which would be a Braided Hair. It certainly can be confusing.

Dave, Dave, Dave...there is never a need to justify having a coin!
