I don't know if I have this in the right section so sorry if not. Just curious on establishing want lists with dealers. I've read a few archived threads on here that kind of helped but not 100% so here goes. I am looking for a few key date coins that meet certain criteria and am having some difficulty finding them. I am thinking about enlisting some help from a dealer that I've bought from before, but don't have a personal relationship with. Should I seek help and give them a want list, what is proper etiquette if I find the coin on my own somewhere else and decide to purchase? Is it ok to "take back" a want list if you no longer need the coin? I just wouldn't want to offend a dealer especially if there's a chance I might need their help with something else later on. Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance.

If you happened to find something on your list you had given them for me its the polite thing to let them know you no longer need it. Unless you wanted to buy another one id suspect no one would be happy about finding something you no longer have interest in buying.

Without an already established relationship its likely they wont really bend over backwards looking for it and would just give you a call if they found something on it. Some may not even want to do that, some may do more. But if theyre offended by honesty if you told them youre no longer looking its probably not going to be that beneficial of a relationship to you.

Just be polite like you would want some one to be with you and it shouldnt be a problem.

A reasonable dealer is going to assume you're not putting all your eggs in his basket, so to speak. It's not only appropriate but important to make adjustments to your standing want list with a given dealer, so he knows your specific desires.

Thanks for the feedback. I would certainly tell the dealer immediately if I found what I was looking for somewhere else. But since I've never established a want list with a dealer just confirming some etiquette first. I want to do things the right way.

Not any more.

Honestly, they add up so quickly I'm really not watching any more.
