Hi all,

Just picked up this nice 1922 50 kopek piece. I had a question for you all.

There seem to be two spots, exactly opposite of each other, where the letters on the reverse didn't print fully on the coin. Either that or someone tried to scratch them off or something. Do you think that this is a minting problem or a defacing kind of thing? Other than those two spots, the coin is in very nice shape.

The last three photos are close ups of those two areas.

Thanks for your opinions.

It might be some grease was in the letters (incuse on the die) that prevented them to be fully struck? Whatever the cause, it most likely happened at the mint. It's pretty common on some coin series too.

Thanks DV,

Any idea how TPG's handle coins that exhibit this? Does it lower an MS grade if the coin is MS?

Wish I could say--I don't own enough slabbed coins to know.

Note to the couple who commented and any who might bump into this thread.

I did submit it and it is coming back as MS 65!!

I was thinking I'd get a low MS and sell it at a small profit, but I am excited to see that the mark-free surface left an impression at NGC!

They did not deduct for the less-than-perfect strike, or else it would have never gotten to MS 65.
