i thought this would be an interesting question: what is the smallest denomination coin you will stop to pick up? yesterday I picked up a penny off the ground that had been there for quite a while, after I saw maybe 20 or so people walk right over and past it. does anyone else bother to pick up pennies?

I have no problem picking up a cent, you never know if it's an error or a variety and either way it's still one cent. John1

one time I went to pick up a penny on a crowded sidewalk and someone stopped me and said "here you need it more than I do" and gave me a five dollar bill. I got a kick out of this, and ever since I always pick up coins I see.

I have bad eyesight and a bad back but I'll stoop to pick up a flat round rock, just incase. I even found a one dollar bill once, just fluttering in the breeze.

Money is money...so pennies no problem. I believe I won't find the bigger stuff if I pass up the smaller stuff. I teach my young son to pick up money too. Finders keepers....found $40 Canadian in the airport parking lot a couple of years ago.

If the penny is face up - I'll pick it up. If it is tails - I'll turn it over and leave it for the next "lucky" person.

Not certain how local laws work in different places but I have heard of a charge called "Theft by Finding" if you do not make an effort to find out who lost it then you are guilty of stealing... what would the fine be for Theft by Finding of a cent... or would there be prison time?

Russian 1 kopek, which is about 0.03 of a US cent. Probably would pick up a smaller-denominated coin as well, but I've never actually seen any. For US Modern in particular, 1 cent is the lowest (as in it doesn't get lower than that). I think I've actually picked up a US cent once (in Akko, Israel).

"See a penny, pick it up. All day long you'll have good luck."
The saying is 'Find a penny, pick it up. All day long, you'll have good luck.' It refers to the fact that pennies are supposed to bring good luck to people. Most people who believe this, believe that heads up is good luck.
When I stop picking pennies up it will be on my way to a nursing home.

I pick up any change I can find.
I found a dime in a parking lot a few weeks ago.
10 years ago when I worked at Sears a coworker superglued a quarter to the floor in the main isle before the store opened and we watched quite a few people try to pick it up until security came by a few hours later and pried it up.
