Purchased a proof coin on ebay a few of weeks ago. Just assumed that it would be the same coin in same marked up holder as shown in the listing. Why wouldn't it be? Never even thought to ask. So it shows up in a different holder. No problem with a circulated coin, but with a proof? I was kind of using the holder to identify it. The coin I received looked good, similar to the one in the listing, and I wasn't going to make a big deal about it, but thought a message to the seller was in order. All I did was suggest that 'someone' (not me of course) might question why the coin wasn't in the holder in the photo. He said he moves coins around in holders all the time to take photos and what-not, and he never thought he was doing anything wrong. He did go on to say that he would take my comment under consideration. This one was only a few bucks, so it was a good learning experience. Next time I buy a proof coin in a holder I'll have to make sure that's EXACTLY what I'm buying.

At the very least, it seems rather petty for the seller not to provide the advertised holder.
There's a clear expectation that what is illustrated is what you get, unless the detailed description says otherwise, so I think you should mention in the feedback that you didn't get the advertised holder.
There's an oft repeated phrase, buy the coin not the holder, so unless the holder was the officially issued holder, you shouldn't have lost more than a few cents.

In the listing the coin was in a cardboard flip with quite a bit of writing on it. A heck of a fingerprint. Never figured it would be a different flip that he would send. IMO he sent another coin. It just doesn't make sense he would reholder it. Like I said for a few bucks I wasn't going to make a federal case about it, but did mention it to him.

Here's the link to the coin I bought. I just assumed it would be the holder and coin as shown ....not http://www.ebay.com/itm/1958-25C-DC...#ht_25wt_900Funny, on a side note he included a message on the packing slip telling me how "I made out like a bandit" on this one, and that he could sell these all day long to his LCS for $10, and they would turn around and sell them for $25. ...that really didn't sit right with me so I had to mention the re-holdering thing to him. I saved him in my 'followed sellers' just to keep an eye on him

Have you thought that he may have re holdered it to make it more presentable instead of sending it in that grungy 2x2

Having now seen the holdered item pictures, I think it's probable that he didn't send you the original item. Is the coin you received a type B reverse ? Is the detail of your coin as good as the picture on ebay ? What would you grade your coin at ? If you complain, you;ll have to send the coin back.

trout......yes, he might have reholdered it. I wouldn't have, but it's possible. Pert..all proofs of that year have the B Reverse, so he was actually being redundant by even saying that. Yes the coin looked good...a nice proof like the one in the listing. I couldn't tell the difference. All he had to do was to send it in the original flip and there would be no questions. People are funny (that's code for strange) sometimes Appreciate the feedback.

Well, now I think there is nothing to worry about. If you receive a proof coin, uncirculated, etc in fact you received what you paid for. It's like when we buy a coin that comes from a roll mint, we don't expect the seller to take a picture of every coin if all are the same.
I think that even if you expected to receive the same holder, it's not mandatory. I would give him a positive feedback with a nice comment, it's just IMHO.

You are right. I gave him 5 star feedback and a good comment. The message I sent to him was private. Agreed, one can't reasonably take a photo of every coin of a proof, unc, roll, etc. At the same time a simple comment on the listing should say something to that effect.....just sounded like he was selling 'that' one in the listing.
