it looks to me that the machine at the bank used to roll coins just scraped the date off. Many coins just have the circular scrape like on the head and shoulder but it is likely that is just scraped harder in some places

Yep, not an error. It's just damage.

I do see roller damage which correlates in circumference to the portion of the missing date but I find it hard to believe that it would completely wipe out that portion of the date with no grind and not affecting the motto.

I would almost venture to guess a planchet flaw or lamination in the date area that was removed while it was hit by the roller.

I think it is just damage. It was probably circulated for years after the damage making it hard to see in thie picture. I bet if you had a close up of the date or had a good loop to look at it you would see remainders of the damage in the date. You can see where it is scratched/smushed in the TY of Liberty.
