I can't make out myself what could have clashed with it, but your coin also looks like something is going on the reverse, possibly a light strike on the bottom letters. Someone more knowledgeable may be able to answer.
The ear to me looks like the bun on the back of Queen Victoria's head but I don't know how that would be possible in 1948. Those marks are raised above all other area's of the coin by the looks of your picture's. I'm not sure what it might be and I'm not an expert either maybe SSP, Zonad or Nicleguy might chime in on it
