Modern coin collectors like to make sets of coins (i.e. acquiring all date and mint mark combinations of a denomination), and the same is possible for ancient coins. In most cases it is very difficult to find these matches for ancients, but with a lot of patience, a good eye, and a bit of luck it can be pulled off. While some have other interpretations of the word, I consider a set of ancient coins to be identical in every aspect with one another except the mint mark. I have several sets in the midst of completion (some only need a coin or two, others need a bakers dozen) and two that are complete. Here they are:

Ancient-
Ancient-
Lugdunum 367 A.D. - 375 A.D.

Obv: D N GRATIA-NVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right
Rev: REPARATIO REIPVB, emperor standing facing, head left, holding Victory on globe in left hand raising kneeling turreted woman with right.
Mintmarks LVGP, LVGS
RIC 28

I was able to find the Prima mint mark this weekend to complete this set. These are the only varieties available of this type from this mint from 367 - 375 A.D.

Ancient-
Ancient-
Sirmium 363 A.D. - 364 A.D.

Obv: D N IOVIA-NVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped, and curiassed bust right
Rev: VOT V MVLT X within wreath.
Mintmarks ASIRM, BSIRM
RIC 120 (Volume VIII)

The first coin in this set is named The Grouch. The first time I laid eyes on it I thought of the Grouch, a character I hadn't seen in at least 15 years! The second has a nice dark patina and the coin is even better in hand.

Does anyone have any sets (in any capacity) that they would like to share?

I have a few going...im currently trying to get rebels and usurpers (im currently trying to acquire a rebel against a usurper). That will eventually include the Britannic, Gallic, Palmyrine empires and a host of rebels (Magnentius, Decentius, Vetranio, Aureolus etc). Hopefully ill be able to acquire the next rebel soon (im in negotiationd for it).

I also have a few minor sets going (SAECVLARES, SMH* campgates, etc) but I have cancelled other sets (the Zoo series, the emperors).

Awesome sets Victor! That is absolutely incredible what you have put together. That's kind of what I'd like to do with my imperial bronze coins. I noticed I have a commemorative from Nicomedia that you don't (SMKA mint mark, you only have Δ listed). PM me if you'd like it we can work something out

I always thought a "type set" should include actual different types that somehow make up a "set", as opposed to very minor variations within one subtype. One doesn't usually talk about a "type set" of, I dunno, bicentennial quarters - which is what your sets remind me of
An example of what I would consider a type set is my "matching" triple of "three emperors" Gloria Romanorum AE4 (Honorius, Arcadius, Theodosius II). If I had any of the later "two emperors" issues, I could've included them in the "set" as well (I don't yet have any).
IIRC, some member here managed to assemble a full set of AE types of some very late emperor (Leo I? don't remember). That would also count as a "type set" (and might or might not be more achievable for some earlier ruler).

I think a set could be anything that you set the parameters for. Love your site Victor.

Well it appears as though I was incorrect in my previous statement that I have all the REPARATIO REIPVB examples of Lugdunum for Gratian. I found another variety that has an S in the right field, bringing the total needed to complete the set to four. I went ahead and got the S/LVGS variety, and I'm eyeing a coin with the S/LVGP combination.

Not exactly a set per se, but I'm trying to obtain as many Byzantine coins of Italy as I can (mainly going for the scarce/rare Rome and Ravenna issues, and any other non-Syracuse Italian-mint coins) . This month I already quadrupled the number of coins I had before... now I have 4!

I was thinking about what january1may said, so I did a bit of research. I compiled information from multiple sources to try and make a comprehensive list of all REPARATIO REIPVB coins under Gratian. I think I got them all, but there may be more I missed somewhere.... My tally is 40 coins total from 12 different mints. So far I have four of them. If anyone is interested I can type out all the varieties I came up with for cross-referencing.

Hmmm. Thanks Victor! That had three more varieties with a rosette diademed bust from Antioch. So the total is now 43. I've got my work cut out for me
