I have a friend stationed in Incirlik AB in turkey and said hed try to get some currency for me. Since I'm not familiar with the currency there I told him to just grab a couple examples of whatever he finds. Is there something in particular I should have him look for. This includes banknotes and coins.
You won't get much in terms of "old coins" from Turkey. Since the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Turkey has had chronic inflation but they never reformed their currency until 2005, when they dropped six zeroes off their currency (1,000,000 old lira became one new lira). Coins and notes labelling the new currency "new lira" were replaced in 2009 with new coins calling them simply "lira" once more.
Pre-2009 coins might still be findable in circulation, though officially they are supposed to be withdrawn. Pre-2009 paper money has been demonetized (though is still redeemable at banks up to 2019) so you're unlikely to find that, either.
The Wikipedia page has links to pictures of their current coins and notes.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
Well hopefully he can find some of the currency they are taking out of circulation. I saw that wiki page before but couldnt figure out why they didnt have anything pre 2005 so thanks for the info
Some commemorative 1-lira coins may exist in circulation, which would be nice to have. Maybe one of our Turkish members will chime in because Krause is pretty bad at classifying coins as circulating or NCLT.
