I've always assumed that, since the tail feathers on this doublestruck taler cannot be seen, and the assayer's initials do not show, that it is probably a very recent issue.

Am I missing something?

WOW! that's really nice. The edge is the give away on this one. Vienna Mint struck sometime after 1960. I won't ask what you paid for it but an item like that could demand a price of somewhere between €800 - €1200 in auction in Europe.

Some info: the Missing S.F. is not an assayers mark or mint mark. Its a mint signature. In the 18th century the Habsburgs used mint marks and mint signatures. The mint signature is developed form the initials of the mint master(CEO if you like) and Mint Warden(2IC) Mint signatures started being used in the 1760s(aprox) and some coins around that time bear both the mint signature and the mint mark.

Thank you very much! I was rather hoping that new information now placed this d/s coin at an earlier time. Oh well. <g>

BTW, here is my off center example -

I've one more question. I have seven other Maria Theresa's, in various conditions. The worst, with it's obverse verdegris, is this one with the ICFA initials.

I would like to sell all. Would anyone even want this piece?

My best,
Bill

Um, depends on how much you want for it, I suppose. I'm sure there's somebody who would want to get a MTT with a reverse signature enough to pay well over melt for this example (heck, I myself would've probably paid $30 or even $50 for it if I had the vaguest idea how).
If you actually want something major - like the $100+ suggested on theresia.name - no idea, but doesn't feel likely.

That last piece is reasonably marketable. It dates to pre-1820 and even with the verdigris there will be interest in it on ebay. That web site is a litle out of date on prices. I think you could possible get US$100.00 for it. Probably closer to US$80.00.

As an aside: US$100.00 doesn't seem major money. Its all a matter of perception of course. When I have been trying to scrape together a couple of Thousand Euros for a purchase US$100.00 looks like small change.

Many thanks. I'll probably put my little group of thalers on ebay soon.

Good luck getting that 2,000 Euros coin!
