i know this is an American coin and I'm posting in the Canadian forum but I am used to you guys now and this variety doesn't really matter what country the coin is from all that matters is how this happened? what it is? and approximate value if any? thanks again

That is a very large die chip. Since it is at the edge of coin, it can also be called a " Cud". Nice one!

A Cud is a specific type of die break that affects the shank and face of a die, all Cuds will form at the rim and emanate inwards. Your Cud appears to have at least 3 successive breaks and it is fairly sizable, I would estimate value at $20-40. One year earlier and I would be ready to throw some cash at you to take it off your hands(1975 is my birth year)
