In the Type Sets thread I showed two coins of Gratian with the REPARATIO REIPVB reverse. I have decided to make it my goal to find and acquire every coin with this reverse type minted under him. I am going to use this thread to keep the community updated on my quest. After more research I found that there are a total of 42 official issues of this coin from 12 cities between the years 378 and 383 A.D. Since there are so many needed to complete this it will take quite some time. I hope you enjoy watching as this thing progresses! This series did not change much during the years of its striking. Only one slight variation for Gratian is known. All mints that produced these coins depicted the emperor as wearing a pearl-diadem, but Antioch struck three types with a rosette-diadem in addition to two pearl types. I will start posting each coin in the order that I got them. Let the games begin!

1 of 42 : BSISCHere is the first one in this series I got. I'm not quite sure when exactly that was but it was easily over a year. At the time I was buying coins for no particular reason other than I liked them, so this one did not receive any of the attention it should have once it arrived.

2 of 42: LVGSAs I started to turn my attention towards western mints I came across this one. I liked the contrast of the patina and the remaining deposits on the surface, and the price was too good to pass up on. Once it arrived I became more interested in this reverse type since I had the previous coin in my collection already.

3 of 42: LVGPA few weeks went by and then I revisited the coin above from Lugdunum. I did a quick ebay search for similar coins and this one showed up. I felt like I was on to something at this point, so this was when I started doing some serious research into this series.

4 of 42: S/LVGSOnce I bought this I looked around more closely and saw how many of these were currently available. It's at this time I decided to embark on this quest to "catch 'em all".

I think a near complete set may be do-able. It will be a very enjoyable numismatic adventure, with a great deal to learn along the way. I wish you a happy journey

5 of 42: (star)ASISC•The seller had miss-attributed this one as having no star. Doesn't change much; it's still a common coin and worth about the same. Siscia offers the most varieties in this series out of any other city.

What's wrong here? That looks a lot like Gratian, but upon closer inspection the legend seems off. All coins of Gratian with this reverse have the I in his name before the break in the legend on the obverse. This one has an I after the break! In my haste, I overlooked this and put a bid on it and won, thinking it was Gratian (as the seller had stated). Nope, turns out this is a hidden gem. Magnus Maximus! I'll take it, especially since I paid a Gratian-level price for it. It will go towards my full REPARATIO REIPVB set, which I plan on completing one emperor at a time (four total). In the future I will be sure to read things more closely

6 of 42: ANTΔ (rosette) Here is my latest example in the series. It features the rosette diadem, which is only seen on some coins of Antioch.

7 of 42: (star)ASISCThis one will be soaked once it arrives. The patina looks very stable and should reveal quite a bit of detail once clean. I like the boldness of the mint mark. Thanks for the responses everyone! And thank you Ben I appreciate that I'm currently eyeing quite a few more so hopefully more updates will be on their way soon.
