While noodling through some recent finds, I came across this 1943 threepence which appears to be double struck. Nothing in Renniks about it Has anyone seen this before ? skyv Edited by skyv 02/07/2014 6:53 pm

Another possibility is a doubled die.

I am thinking doubled die rather than double strike. I don't think it's MDD because I can see splits in the serifs on the obverse legends.

Doubled dies result from an incorrect hubbing of the production dies by the master dies. Generally the hubbing process requires the master die to be pressed into a steel blank multiple times to get a correct impression of the design. If, for some reason the dies misalign from one pressing to the next then you can see multiple instances of the same design element. This wiki article is a decent explanation of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doubled_dieI must admit I am unaware of a doubled die variety on the 1943 threepence. I'll send an email to someone who may know of it.

My friend is going to look through his bulk 1943 3d's to see if he can find a partner for your 3d and I'll post some pictures up here when I can. He agrees with me that it is hub-doubled and hasn't seen or heard of the variety before.

That would be interesting if he can find a partner for it.

Well I can confirm that there are duplicates of this coin. My friend found two low grade examples in his 1943 3d stash and I managed to find one on ebay last night after an hour or two of trolling through all the 1943 coin listings. I'll post up pictures once I have it in hand.

Here's the one I plucked from ebay along with some close ups. Definitely a hub-doubled obverse and as far as I am aware a new discovery. Well done OP.
