Here's a coin that arrived today. It's a documented die variety--which has extra characters punched into the crown area. It's unclear what these characters might be.
These details are incuse, which means they were raised on the die. Since all the details are below the coin's fields, this means the design is raised above the fields of the die--which is not the typical die setup.

That's a good question! Perhaps they were experimenting with something, and just re-used the die blanks?
As I mentioned, this particular series is a bit of an oddity and hard for me to understand, since the design is below the fields.
