Hi John

I don't think that they're common, but they do pop up occasionally, though not as often as some other years. While I have quite a few KGV doubled dates, most of them are from the 1940's and early '50's. I do have one from 1939, a match to yours, but the 3 is not as strongly doubled. The years which I have found the toughest to find are 1937 and 1949; it took quite a while to get my 1949 and I've not yet seen a 1937, though I assume they exist (I hope so, anyway, so I can get the whole set!). At any rate, nice find on your 1939!

Hmm... on the right side of the 3 and the 7 the edge of the numbers slope outward slightly down to the field, and under some lighting it tends to look like doubling when it's not (most if not all years are like this -- the slope is to make it easier for the coin to release from the die). However on the left side, on inside of the 3 it looks like there might be doubling, but it's hard to tell from the photo, possibly it's just the slope of the 3 again like on the right. Could we get a different shot, without the shadow? If it turns out out be a nice double I would be so jealous...

From what little I can see of the coin your penny looks like it's in nice shape though, with a bit of original lustre yet, so even if it's not a double date you still have a nice one. Nice find!
