Got a couple of JCs a few months back, forgot to post them. One of each elephant type

Julius Caesar. 49-48 BC.
AR Denarius. Struck by the military mint traveling with Caesar.
Obverse: elephant standing right (walking right in second coin), trampling on serpent; CAESAR in exergue
Reverse: simpulum, sprinkler, axe and priest's hat.
Reference: Crawford 443/1; Sydenham 1006.

Gaius Julius Caesar reigned from October 49 BC until his assassination on March 15, 44 BC. These are examples of the first coin struck in his name. The elephant trampling a snake may represent Caesar's victory over the Gauls; the conquest of good over evil. The priestly implements on the reverse refer to Caesar's position as Pontifex Maximus (high priest of Rome).

The first coin shows a portly ill-proportioned elephant, standing. The second more common elephant appears to be walking and while still not 'high art', the elephant is a little more lifelike.

------

I've been wanting to find a place to dump my coin photos online, a nice gallery. Thought about Flikr (nah), halfheartedly started some albums on Forvm (icky layout, no flexibility), and finally looked at various free website hosts. It's free now but at some point I'll probably exceed the free storage space and bandwidth... then I'll have to either stop adding to it or pay a small monthly fee. We'll see.

Anyway, here's the site. http://inaruvi.wix.com/tif-coins

Just started it yesterday, still working on the organization and of course I have lots of things yet to upload. Please browse around and tell me if you have any navigational difficulties or suggestions.

Right now it looks like I can only have subcategories under the items listed in the header-- can't make sub-subcategories, sub-sub-subcategories, etc. That's going to get cumbersome once I add many more to the galleries. I've also maxed out the number of categories that will fit across the top. I could have more but they'd end up lumped under a 'more' button at the far right of the header. Without going into boring detail, that's not a good option.

Great site TIF. How can you "forget" to post JCs?

Are you sure that top one is OK?

If you're asking if the top would might be fake, I'm reasonably sure it's not. Purchased from a reputable auction house and vetted by more experienced ancient coin collectors.

Here's a better example of the type, from http://www.artancient.net/servlet/t...ilver/Detail

Oh yes I have indeed been a very bad girl. I won't be buying more coins for a long long time because I just bid on and won a spectacular coin, one I've been plotting to get.

One of those things... it SPOKE to me (and a dozen other bidders...). I'm getting payment to Italy this week and it will probably take a month before I have it in hand but I will wait until I have it and take good pictures before posting.

I'm on the coin wagon now. Except that I did buy a couple from Pecunem recently which arrived yesterday. But for now, I have to stop buying. Still have gobs of coins from various mixed lots to sort through and photograph so between that and working on this website, hopefully I'll be distracted from the urge to buy more.
