Thanks partly to a tip from a fellow sufferer an embarrassment of riches showed up yesterday. Four separate packages ! A record breaking day for sure. One package was a very impulsive buy of 20 coins. Quite a mix of things really. Five AE's of Claudius ! One complete 'dud' (The only one of 20) One As Constantiae reverse (lower grade) one As Libertas reverse (low grade) one As reverse Minerva (low grade) one dupodius Claudius seated (low grade) couple of Auggie a Titus a Pius a Hadrian and some interesting LRB's ! Cheap Cheap ! I think I got this one Id'd but need reassurance as I am notso good at these types. So who is this guy ? I am thinking I am happy about this. 4.92 grams 22-3mm Thanks for the tip Mssr. 'Whiz' Edited by FVRIVS RVFVS 02/12/2014 10:02 am

How would you grade these (both I mean)? I am unfamiliar with many LRB's excepting the very common types.
I dabbed this one with 'Blue Ribbon' and gave a quick buff with the brass brush. Smooth black patina with few if any blemishes. Yours certainly has more detail beneath the encrustation and an easily readable mint mark. I believe I can read O N on mine (same as yours) which is Arles ?

Yep, Magnus Maximus. I have one of him, somewhere (and a fragment of one of his Silaquae), and also a Flavius Victor (thats how it came to me, and I've got no contrary evidence, but it could be a Mag Max - comparing busts and designs, I came out with Flav Vict).
Its a nice one - worn but not corroded. Its often the reverse of that - mint state details but melted and corroded.

Quote: I dabbed this one with 'Blue Ribbon' and gave a quick buff with the brass brush.~FVRIVS RVFVS I'd never heard of "Blue Ribbon" for cleaning coins, so I had a look on Google. Over here in the U.K. we have "Blue Riband" Chocolate bars made by the Nestle company. In Australia they have "Blue Ribbon" but it is a Chocolate ice cream made by the "Streets" company. Neither of those of course would I dab on coins, I don't think those "chocolate coins" would go down well, literally.

Quote: In Australia they have "Blue Ribbon" but it is a Chocolate ice cream... I will admit, that was the picture that went through my mind... briefly. But I assume that it's this stuff we're all talking about.

While I admit that 'chocolate' is my second favorite coin color after 'olive' the Blue Ribbon I had in mind is in fact the one you found. Unfortunately it cannot be obtained anymore. It contained a highly aromatic solvent which was banned. A few years ago I would grab one at the coin shop for $6 a bottle. Then it was gone and the sellers online were asking $30. Now I cannot find it at all. My bottle is almost empty now ...... A sad end to a long run.
Fortunately my brother has a half bottle which he has kindly offered to part with. At the age of 65 he suddenly decided he preferred his coins to have the 'dry' look !
