I bought them because these are pretty popular in other countries and nobody on ebay will ship them outside the United States, so there's my market niche (don't steal it ). $6 seemed pretty good (below issue price, I think) but apparently they are even cheaper in the States. So how much could you American members buy these common proof sets for?
$6 is current FMV according to Numismedia for '92, so you did well. Occasionally you can find some proof sets at shows or in shops down in the $4.50 range - lowest I've seen.
I'm a big fan of proof coins but apparently I'm somewhat alone because you have got to admit that's a lot of beautiful, high quality coinage for 6 bucks a pop. Seems to me everyone just want's to give them away but they are what they are; Great looking inexpensive gems.
Oh and what did I pay for mine (to answer the question). Whatever they cost from the mint. My set dates back to 1960, Most have been bought directly from the mint by me or my Dad.
Sometimes a dealer friend of mine buys large amounts of proof sets in his shop. These are usually 1979-1993 dates. He usually charges me $3.00-$4.25 a set. Sometimes I can get some 1972 sets for $2.50 or so. These are always nice sets,no toning or spots. I usually sell them at the flea market or coin show for $4 to $5.50 a piece. You did good.
