I got all worked up and excited last week. I thought I had made a terrific find !
Pertinax !

Alas t'was not to be .......

I could read the legend PERTIN AVG. The beginning being somewhat obscure.
Well I did come back down to earth when I found the match (and spotted the SEV).
As far as I can tell the only city to issue with the longer PERTIN instead of PERT.

Oh well ...... keep on trying !

Septimius Severus AE25 of Kremna, Pisidia
IMP C L SEP SEVER PERTIN AVG laureate draped and cuirassed bust right
DIANAE C-REM, Diana standing facing head left, holding patera and spear, stag at foot right.
Von Aulock, Pisidien II 1168

9.48 grams 25-28mm

The bust even looks like Pertinax.

Thats exactly what I thought ! This does not look like Septimius so I stopped and examined it carefully.
My pics are better than the sellers and all I could see was P E R T I N. I got rather worked up. The bid was at $20 !
Took me almost half an hour before my bubble popped. By then I rather liked it.
I bid $25 and walked with it.

Looks like a long term oil bath would remove some of that encrustation, but very very long term. Might be long enough to retone the exposed bronze.

Ben In my haste I gave it a short bath in distilled and a 5 second buff with the 'brush'.
The color you see is just a bit of tinting left by the brass and it will fade away.
