What is a reasonable price to pay for a slabbed F-12 type coin? Completed ebay auctions seem high compared to what the Red Book suggests, which is unusual... Just how rare is this series, specifically problem-free coins?

Its all going to depend on the year but sold ebay auctions are going to be far more accurate than a price guide. Red Book is honestly terrible for prices. By the time the books published theyre already out of date. Bust halfs have been getting hot lately and harder to find cheap like early copper which is why youre seeing the sale prices higher than RedBook

It depends on what year the coin is. This series is more expensive in problem free coins. I would say anywhere from $500 to $1000 going off ebay sales.

With some patience you should be able to find a very nice F12 for around $350. If you want one this weekend then figure $450 unless you get lucky. These are very common so finding a type coin is easy. Finding a nice one at a good price might take a month or two though.

I would think about $400-$450. I have been looking for them as well and think that is about the going price for common dates.

Ok thanks. Does anyone have any info on the relative rarity of this older type? In your opinion, are they under or over valued at this point?
What is your opinion on the best value for an older type coin? (Liberty cap (half) cents, draped bust dimes, quarters, halves, dollars)

Quote: In your opinion, are they under or over valued at this point? Speculating on the relative value of a given issue is the best way to learn the true meaning of the word "speculation." Their value remains directly tied to what people are willing to pay for them, and there's no way for us to determine what everybody else will be willing to pay in the future. Assume that all prices for everything are market-accurate, all the time, and direct your thinking towards topics more useful. It'll be a lot less stressful.

Draped Bust Dollars are by far the least expensive of the silver draped bust coins. So, in my opinion that makes them a bit undervalued, but as SuperDave stated the market is dictated by what people are willing to pay. Good luck with your search!
