Hello all, I am curious to see if anyone knows what I have here:

British-War-Medal?

British-War-Medal?

I googled around and see that the design matches that of the British War Medal, awarded during and shortly after WW1:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_War_Medal

My conundrum is that apparently, the medal should be 36mm in diameter, whereas mine is obviously about the size of a US penny at around 18mm.

Thoughts anyone?

I see. Is it (or was it) customary for medal recipients to also receive a miniature version of their medal for parades?

Almost certainly not a medal with such mushy details. Not to mention the loop at the top... my guess is you have a piece of a post WWI-era sewing kit. They made these little things to help thread needles (I think... I'm not much of an expert on sewing) and quite frequently modeled them after coins or medals for the sake of novelty. I had a few at one point that were modeled after old-style British large pennies, but smaller than a (US) cent and made of plastic. Yours is probably iron or some other base metal.
