Hi, all ...

First let me say I know next-to-nothing about metal detecting. So when a friend suggested I take his detector with me on my next Queensland trip, I did.

Each school holidays my wife and I take turns minding our grandsons while our daughter is at work, doing her 'single parent' thing.

Anyway, it was my turn to make the couple thousand km journey up to the Gold Coast. And, cutting quickly to the chase; the next morning we were at some athletics track around Ashmore - about 25 minutes walk from where they live.

Well, old Pop didn't let on he had zero detecting know-how. In fact, just so they wouldn't be disappointed, actually brought a couple coins with me

But here's the good part... almost on arrival and near the grand-stand in the sandy soil and 2 inch grass, the MINELAB 'Musketeer' went bloody ballistic! And I mean coins ... $2,$1,$2,50c,20c ... ring pull, bottle top, bottle top, $2,$1,$2,$2... and how flamin' good is this?

As you might expect, our excitement didn't go unnoticed, and soon we were mobbed by an inquisitive group of kids and their carer(presumably vacation-care). The questions came thick and fast, and the odd demand also: "Hope you don't leave holes that people might fall and hurt themselves..!" from the young carer, sent to save the planet(?).

I decided to call it a day before we got blamed for climate change, or worse.

So it was good. Especially since all I knew was how to switch the darn thing on! And couple days later we hit a local beach, found 70 cents, bought ice-cream and caught the bus home. Next time out we went to a near-by playground. No money this time, but found a bike and skate-board hidden among bushes, dug up a small 'matchbox' type car ... and that was it! Methinks eventually the kids got bored and just wanted to kick their football. And who can blame them? So did I.

Cheers,

Makes me want to start hitting the pawn shops looking for a detector.
