hello everyone, I hope all is well. I am just wondering what you all think about this coin and if I'm correct on my thoughts on it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/31087217608....m1431.l2649
As the title indicates I think this coin has been cleaned and retoned. Many things make me think this.
1. the color doesn't seem right for the wear level. it's too white. this coin imo is about f12-f15, for this color id expect a nice au or ms coin. maybe a really nice xf.
2. for an original coin of this color I'd expect a lot more luster. I don't see any on this one really.
3. the reverse shows a lot of questionable spots to me. like the blackness around and inside the various letters of one dime, the leaves on the reverse seem to have a lot of the same too.
Do you guys think the retoning is natural or do you think whoever cleaned her also did something to her to start the retoning? It's still my weakest area imo but to me it looks ok.

It's a crying shame they(whoever did it, the seller may not be involved in this part for all I know) did that to this coin. I also wouldn't be surprised to see it pay off for the seller too. I see it happen a lot on ebay.
personaly if this coin were original and didn't show any problems how much would you pay for it? I was thinking about $20-$25 w/shipping is where Id be on it.

Thanks guys. I think I'm getting the hang of spotting cleaned coins and just need a little re-assurance or a wake up call if I'm on the totally wrong path. thanks again-justin

The coin was probably cleaned at some point. The toning looks like it came from placing the coin in an album, even circulated coins will tone.

Blatant. No natural toning process results in that irregular coloring pattern.

Yeah that Barber has certainly been cleaned and the toning does seem very unusual. I honestly wouldn't even buy it because you can get a nice circulated example for that price.

It that the coin was cleaned probably many years ago. Now I say probably because if you look at that obverse toning check at 6:00 o'clock. Look at the blue color left of the 1 verses what is just right of the 3. The natural instinct you have after you've look at enough coins is to say well that's old album toning that's developed over several years. However see how most of the reverse is a brighter white than the untoned areas of the reverse? That can happen with old album toning to. That's what I think happened here but you do need to be aware that there are people that can artificially tone coins to make them look like they got old album toning when it was in fact manufactured.

IF it stayed in the $15 dollar area, with a statement that first time buyers get $10, might be a decent buy. However, there is that $4 shipping stuff, usually a paypal fee, an ebay fee and possibly lost I'm mail thing. All to complecated for me. Toning doesn't look real but then too, what is real toning?

My max bid on the coin was $2.75. 6.75 for the coin when shipping is included is a bit much imo but I kind of like the coin and have been looking for a 1893 that I don't mind looking at for a while now and it's one of the last 20 barbers I need to complete a circulation set and finding one I kind of like has proved difficult so far so overpaying a few dollars in this case isn't something that bugs me.
for its current price, I am way out. my 6.75 w/shipping was my top for it.
thanks for participating in my thread everyone. Could you maybe critique my thought process on the coin and why I think it's cleaned a bit for me too please? I'm still learning and it helps me. :)
