I was browsing online and stumbled across this very interesting app that can detect whether or not a Silver or Gold coin is fake. There are some caveats to this app called Cointrust, but thought I would pass it along to my fellow CCF users.
I like how its first instruction is to clean the coin.
While a good idea to make an app that can perform that function, I dont put any weight into sound tests. Theres a million things that could make it sound off that have nothing to do with the coin itself.

It's SoundHound for coins. It is like anything else that has to to with audio electronics or electronics in general, the system is only as good a it's weakest link. It could be the best most precise app ever, but the app means nothing if you have a bad microphone.
So let me get this right, clean the coin and then drop it on the floor and record the sound ? And find out if it is still worth anything after you have cleaned and dropped it?

I wouldn't use or trust the app, clean drop surface thickness noise etc......... .............. just a pain.
A lot of no-name apps are spyware or just blatant advertising with a product that fakes what it does. Before downloading an app, first thing you do is look at the feedback comments. Second thing you do is look at the permissions that you give the app, for example giving the app access to your contacts and gps when the app doesn't need to do so. UK has these sensors in public places that can read who you are and your preferences so they can better advertise to you, or so they say.
Have there been any recent product improvements, positive/negative comments or alternative sound detection devices w/r/t this featured device for detecting fake gold?
Applying some stringent and consistent testing methods to this type of sound waves technology would seem to furnish a unique fingerprint for each purity level of gold.
I own an iPhone that needs a reliable app for this purpose.
