Seleukis-And-Pieria,-Apameia-1st-Century-B.c.
Apameia, Ancient Greek

Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right
Rev: AΠAMEΩN THΣ EIPAΣ KAI AΣYΛOY KΛ, Elephant standing right (Date H before?)
20 mm, 8.64 g
Hoover 1420.

Unfortunately due to a bad flan and harsh edge wear, the exact BMC number of this coin will never be able to be identified (I do have a strong opinion that it may be BMC 15). Still, this is one of the very few Greek coins I own. I have always been very captivated by this bust type, and the elephant on the reverse was too cool to pass up.

Yeah I do too, Chris. Seleucus I had his commissariat there, which comprised of 500 elephants, 30,000 mares, and 300 stallions. Although he was there a few hundred years before this coin was struck, there's no doubt the elephant on the reverse is in tribute to that army. I imagine they had quite an impression on the local Greeks

Apameia (Syria) was founded in 300 B.C., but it doesn't appear that it issued coinage before 150 B.C. There was somewhere in the range of 20-30 types of coins minted there, so there isn't much in terms of selection. I will be posting another Apameian (Phrygia) coin soon. I need the picture to post and vcoins seems to be down right now.
