I am scratching my head on this auction and others like it. Why would people be so anxious to pre-buy a coin for $60+ that they can purchase from the mint for $35 when it becomes available?

I think Rick hit the nail on the head. Also, the Mint website is very erratic (at best) and ordering from the mint by phone is its own special headache. ebay is fast and convenient. People don't always consider whether it's the "best" deal; they just know that it's easy.
