I am not really interested in the PCGS registry but its an easy way for me to keep track of the coins I need to complete sets. I was surprised to see that I am ranked 21 in the Basic Proof Nickel 1965 to date section.
Why am I surprised?
My set does not contain a single PR70 coin. Looking at the population figures for the modern PR70s I thought I would be way down the list with my 69s. It would seem that a large portion of PR70 owners are also not interested in the registry. Which leads me to the question how representative is the Registry in reality? Are the top ranked collections really the top collections?

The registry program is far from definitive on the top sets IMO.

Even I if I buy a slabbed coin its life expectancy in the slab is less than 10 minutes once I have my hands on it . and I don't think I'm alone !!

I suppose some folks find it exciting to rank up in the top or even at the top in the number 1 slot ,, but the only real challenge to doing it is having the funds to buy the coins ,,complete with the opinion on the grade attached.

For top collectors check out some of the older Red Books. There used ot be a section in the back of the top collectors. I think it is gone now for some reason. I doubt that most of them are into the PCGS registry stuff. I know many, many coin collectors and dealers. I only know one that has anything to do with the PCGS registry. As already noted, I too am a person that when I buy a slabbed coin, within minutes of the time I get home it is out of the slab and the plastic is in the garbage.

Congrats on the ranking. This might not be a popular set to have people in for the registry.
