This has just started another 10 day cycle on the bay.
The guy lives pretty close to me, 15 miles or so and runs a pawnbrokers type of place. He is asking 999.00 GBP on this atm & I can get it for a good chunk less - does this look ok?

Sellers Pictures.

Kev, I wouldn't know whether it was a fake or not. It does look a bit beaten up. Have you had a look around for other examples which have sold?

I have had a look at some of them Ann, there seems to be a big jump in price from this worn one to a fine one. I was thinking this might be a good starter for me to work up from, but I am in the same boat when it comes to knowing if it's ok or not. Might be worth me taking a drive. Thought it would be worth a post here, the collectors of these would probably spot a 'wrong un' a mile away.

One of the most common of faked ancient coins in good gold.

Sometimes, batches of fakes of these are 'jingled'. That is, a small batch of them are put together in a lapidary tumbling barrel, and are bashed against each other to degrade them. This degrades them, but it is also an excellent way of hiding any casting or striking faults. It is also a way closely copying wear on a genuine coin.

Imagine: 2,300 years ago a batch of them could have been put in a leather bag on a camel's back, and transported for a thousand miles along a trade route. The resultant 'jingling' would have had the same effect as a tumbling barrel.

Because of this, I am unable to say if this one is fake or not.
It needs to be checked for accurate weight less about 3% for wear, and compared for style against the data bases for faked Nike gold staters.

An XRF test for trace elements other than the gold would help to show up if it is of modern manufacture or not. The genuine ones are around 95% pure, and have a typical fingerprint of remaining elements which the ancient refiners were not able to remove. Modern gold is typically alloyed with copper or silver only.

I have a Niton xl2 gun that I use for finding thick plated stuff, never tried it on coins.
I like the comparison of the tumbler to the sack of coins, it's really easy to forget how things used to be way back when..
I might pass on it and stick to silver, Nathan has done me proud so far and I know what I am getting is 100 percent.

I am very leery of any banged up gold coins. Think of more modern coins like sovereigns. You really don't see many in less than VF condition as they just didn't get used all that much. Even if someone in ancient times were carrying gold I presume they would keep them pretty 'close to the vest' so to speak. Gold being as heavy as it is does not really bounce around all that much either. I have only had the pleasure once or twice to hold a handful of gold coin. They don't really 'jingle' so well. In fact much like lead they tend to want to remain at rest !
Count me as sceptical on this coin.

Kevin, IMO the coin looks genuine but worn. I don't see any signs of casting and the color looks right. It would be nice if the reverse had better detail. But if you can get it at a decent price it would be a nice addition to your collection.
