I'm just learning about errors like this. I have taken a couple of gambles with looks. I'd like to say I would have bid on it, but I'm not 100% certain. Luckily for me most of the gambles I've made have turned out to be decent coins. That was a fun post. Thanks.

I know it does not have the Cud but what you think about this one?

That's a nuce IHC in AU! As far as it being the overdate, the date position is different for starters. Here's a pic showing the main markers for the 1888/7 Snow-1:

The knob does seem a little right, but could that be another shadow effect or a nicely placed piece of blah. It also has the 3 weakly struck feathers. Shows a lot of similar signs except for the Die Cuds. I just thought it was a neat, hard to tell coin.

I see that little "knob"--and now I remember seeing this coin on ebay, right? Still, the 8/7 doesn't really matter if the date position is off. The Snow-1 is the only confirmed 8/7. That doesn't stop a lot of people from claiming they have a new overdate, but all those claims remain unproven.

Yeah it was on ebay that I got the pic from. I guess I don't understand what you mean by the date position.

On IHCs from 1859-1908, the date was added to the die after it was hubbed. So the date position is different on every die made. Date position on IHCs is an important determinant of die variety. It helps me quickly sort through coins that can't be what I'm looking for.

IHC variety searching is very detailed--but it has its rewards--as the story goes.

I'm just glad I have a reason to back through all the coins I've had since I was a kid. So far I've found around 10 snow varieties and some maybes. Looking for them on ebay has been a lot of fun as well. Just hunting, and learning that I know very little, has been how this goes.

I suppose it is possible. The Cud could be so worn down that it is no longer visible. However, I think the date position is slightly off. Without clearer pictures of the date and a 'no return policy' it is not worth the gamble. See what DV has to say.

The date position is noticeably different--meaning it's impossible to be the Snow-1. Besides, the markers just aren't there for the overdate. I think the seller is just fishing for bids from people who hope it's the 1888/7. If it were the real overdate, it's worth getting slabbed. The 8/7 is visible even in lower grades like this G4.
