For specimen toonies with the brilliant/shiny finish (not frosted), how do you confirm the coin is a specimen versus a regular circulating coin?

haha, like you said it's shinier. Even after circulating for a while they still retain a weird glow to them. Sorry I don't have any pictures to show you. I've found a couple in circulation over the years.

Specimen toonies have a brilliant relief against a parallel lined background. The brilliant on shiny is NBU or NC or whatever.

Are there some example pictures somewhere? I'm having a tough time telling the difference for the 1996-2003 coins.

Lots of pics on ebay, but be careful of the sellers that list NBU coins as specimen.

here's a good pic of specimen finish

PS The 1996 and '97 toonies from BU sets also have specimen finish.

I think I might have found one minted 1996. It doesn't seem to have any tarnish or wear and it's also shinier than all the other coins. It's also got vertical lines running down it like you said, but it's clear only when seen from the side. I can scan or photo it if you want to see.
Sorry for asking but what does NBU and NC stand for?
