Wouldn't you buy it for that amount too if it was missing a star?

to be honest I had not noticed the star not being visible. I just noticed all the damage to the coin on the reverse side

Not really. Fairly common N10. Likely Grease Filled Die.

I'm fairly certain we all own a coin or two that others would gasp at our purchase price

The neck hole although bad is not as distracting to me as the reverse damage. Only coins I have purchased that have that gasp at the price power are the slabbed key date coins I overpaid for. 1893S Morgan, 1909S VDB, 1937D 3 legged Buffalo all fit this description.
