Sorry I posted this in the new members thing I'm new here sorry. But here it is again hope you can all help I need some expert advice.

Hi guys , firstly I'm new here and stumbled on to you guys looking for info on a penny I bought. I got a shock when I seen all these fakes on gumtree and started me thinking. Is mine real.

I just bought it and am waiting for it to be delivered ( ebay grrr) and for much more than the fakes sell for.
Anyways I appreciate if you look at the photos there not good but there what were in the add.
Now I'm no expert but I will say I'm worried the 5 does not look like the ones in photos on here but maybe its just me or the pics I hope. Anyways here the pics and my fingers are X. Thank you all who may reply or who take the time to look.

I've just had a look at other specimens on the web, and the 5 looks normal. 3rd rarest commonwealth copper coin, nice. I'd advise you not to worry, until you have it in your hand and can put a photo or scan up of it then. Because it looks dark, and I think that's the seller messing around with photoshop contrast, to make the details stand out more. Also you need to take into consideration the angle of the picture, best way for coins to be pictured in their truest form is on a scanner, or with supermodels posing next to them :D. When you receive it, put it up on here-then decide the fate of the coin, if there is a problem you can send it back-but i'd be confident. Nothing to worry about mate.

Thank you for your reply. I hope your right, I no very little about the fakes other than they exist. I seen some on Gumtree brand new and aged as they called them $15 bucks but at least he says there fakes but what about the people who buy them of him. and the aged ones look aged LOL.

Also how come there are so many on gumtree I thought you couldn't sell fakes. Am I missing something here ? this is shade practice and I cant believe consumer affairs allow it or the feds. Regards Sweetap.

This one has the aged coins, now I know you guys can pick straight up but some of these would probably fool me. I see they do the Crowns as well and bugger me I seen some identical on ebay same colouring, I just stick to me florins I think I just wanted a 25 penny that's all.

Geez this has dampened my new found hobby. Not sure what to think about all this faking stuff at first I just thought who would bother. Silly me.

Well mate over time you get used to identifying fakes etc, I'm new to collecting aswell. One place I like to look for coins is museum surplus sites, you can buy some great ancient coinage for alright prices-better than ebay 0-o prices sometimes. There are fakes for everything unfortunately, but don't let that put you off. This is a fun/interesting hobby, and even if someone says 'no returns accepted' on ebay and they sell a fake, you can open a case on ebay and send it back for a refund-get it fully tracked mind you. ebay will look after buyers. And this site is a trove of knowledge and friendly people, all with the same interests and concerns as one another regarding fakes etc. Another thing I'm considering is metal detecting, considering you live in Australia it might be worth your while. I'd wait for someone else's opinion on here, but i'd say that the 5 looks fine. But wait til it arrives, and it is packaged well. I saw some guys yesterday bid up to £700 on a fake krugerand coin-the guy listed it 1 oz gold krugerand nothing else. Just do all your checks you can, ask questions to the seller and on here. And if it doesn't feel right, don't get it. Also on here, they show ebay sales/auctions from trusted people. Don't give mate, you've only just begun. People who fake are a pain in the arse, but it would take more than a pain in the arse to stop me-hope it's the same for you mate.

Thank jbuck and thanks awallin01.

Yes I been a member of ebay for a long time but I'm always suspicious , I pondered over this coin for days comparing it to others it just looked good with the colour and stuff and even the centre diamond was visible the date thing was something I just learnt about.

I will wait till it comes and then let you guys help me out if I have to I will take it to be checked. Its not a million dollars its just if its not a real AUSSIE coin I just don't want it. I want it for my kids as part of a collection I'm building to leave them as my family is very old settlers and its important. Well to me and my family I hope. And its not a coin collection its many things Australiana, I do collect florins though sort of. I like them cause there silver LOL. Seem to represent some sort of real value even if it just in my brain. LOL OH well thank you for replying.

Hey man what you're doing is really cool and nice for family. I collect all sorts of historic stuff aswell, my latest was a Ushabti with an inscription from the book of the dead. It seems like you're building a mini museum like me, different genres but same ideology. And I'm the same with buying coins with a precious metal and numismatic value, I like doing that-feel like a pirate :D . But I also collect non precious ancient coinage. I'm fascinated wit history. Good luck with the coin, and let us know what happens.

Yes the photos are a bit dodgy but if it is genuine you
got a good deal for the price although if its a fake the seller says he doesn't give refunds which is a bit suspicious

Hi stevo1962. Thank you for replying.

Yes he says no refunds that was one of the reasons that made me suspicious after I seen all the fakes getting around and finally found this place.

But that will not matter if it is fake I will just open a dispute as I made sure to pay with Paypal and credit card so if they refuse to help I will just do a redraw and send it back. But I just hope its not, It does have a little damage to the rim if you look at about 4-5 o'clock so I'm hoping its the real thing but I must say I am concerned and I wouldn't have a clue if its real or not. I will have to take it to someone as I can look at it till I'm blue in the face and wouldn't know.

I have tried to pick things on it but honestly they all look the same to me even those new ones on gumtree would have fooled me. I just know nothing at all about pennies and coins I just collect them cause I like Aussie stuff.

I don't collect pennies though just florins this is the very first penny I have ever bought just hope its not a mistake. OH and I thought the price was hi compared to others that have sold on there so are they all just fakes on ebay.?. God I can see this being a bad lesson for me. I haven't got a clue, I'm totally in the dark and a bit worried to be honest.

Hi awallin, thank you for replying.

Yes sort of like a museum but maybe more like to reflect me a little bit is what I want to leave them, You know a true aussie battler sort of thing so when they pick it up or look at it that it reminds them of me and not to be sad my days have finished and that everything about me is about them and my country, this is why I want it to be genuine so that they can always keep it and no its real just like my feelings for them are.
A repo fake what ever you like to call it would be fine but I don't want it to be fake it needs to represent real feelings so real is what it needs to be.
That was all it was just a silly thing that came into my head for no apparent reason and probably is pretty stupid but here goes nothing for trying I guess.

Thank you for replying.

As the others have mentioned it is difficult to be absolutely certain it is genuine because the photos arn't great but having said that there is also nothing that stands out that makes me think it is a fake. So hopefully you have picked up a good buy.

But it does pay to do a bit of research. Especially when buying a key date coin

Hi wwwww, can you tell me what I should tell the seller, What is it that makes it fake. My thoughts were the 5 and maybe the 1 but I just don't know. This is disastrous. OH lord I new it was gonna be a fake after seeing all the reports on this site about them.

Always to late. OH well if you can tell me what to tell ebay why it is a fake Ill just do that and send it back. This looks like its going to be a mission gone wrong big time. OH well guess no one to blame but me. I will try to get my money back then , devastated smashed crippled demolished arrr bugger. I would swear but its not your faults LOL. Thank you any info much appreciated on helping resolve said now ripped off with a fake penny.
Should I take it to a coin place and have them check it or would that be a waste of my money now that it,s a fake.
